What is The Power of Something Else?
The mind is a wonderful thing. Very few people realize just how powerful their state of mind really is. When one focusses their attention on the negative their reality begins to reflect this negative state of mind. Similarly, when one focuses on the positive their reality begins to reflect this positive state of mind. Some may argue that this is where the law of attraction may come into place. This post will set aside the “law of attraction” for now and focus on something that is a little more tangible, “The power of something else”.
The power of something else is a psychological technique that capitalizes on the tendency of the brain to perceive the same situation differently based on preconceived biases. This is a fundamental function that underlies the way humans interact with each other on a day to day basis. It makes it so we don’t need to go through the full process of categorizing a situation each time we encounter something new. Our brain takes a previous situation that was similar combines it with how we felt about that situation and voila we have a perception of the current situation. This perception ultimately becomes our current reality.
Imagine standing in a room filled with mirrors on all sides. Each mirror is attached to a person, situation, or object that you interact with daily. These mirrors reflect your perception of that person, situation, or object whether they be negative or positive. If one is surrounded by negative mirrors everything becomes negative and likewise when one is surrounded by positive mirrors everything becomes positive. An anecdote of this can be seen below.
Jesse and his cat:
Jesse wakes up early in the morning to the heart wrenching sound of his alarm clock. He glances at the clock and to his dismay it reveals what he already knows, it is time to get ready for work. He sluggishly makes his way to the kitchen. Jesse thinks to himself, it is time to make some bacon and eggs. He opens the fridge and to his disappointment he is out of eggs. He slams the fridge door and gives it a kick for good measure.
His cat saddles up beside him and begins to rub against his ankle. Jesse looks down at the cat only to sneer at the poor feline. “Don’t give me that look!” He says with malcontent. The cat meows loudly. “There you go again, going on with your nonsense. What do you want from me?” He nudges the cat away from him. After eating his bowl of plain oatmeal Jesse looks outside only to see that it is pouring outside. He lets out a loud sigh and heads to his car.
While driving he get stuck in the morning rush. After yelling several curse words and banging on his steering wheel he finally makes it in to work. When he arrives to work his direct supervisor reprimands him for being fifteen minutes late. Jesse decides not to argue his case believing that it will only make things worse. He approaches his desk where he sits beside his co-worker whom gives him a meek smile. Jesse squints and grunts as he begins to toil away at the computer. Checking the time every five minutes he clenches his fists at the monotony that is his job. After an eight-hour shift Jesse heads home where he is greeted by his cat. “What are you really good for? All you do is eat, sleep, and poo all over my floor!” He says to the cat.
James and his cat:
James wakes up early in the morning to the heart buzzing sound of his alarm clock. He glances at the clock and smirks as it reveals what he already knows, it is time to start a new day. He quickly makes his way to the kitchen. James thinks to himself, it is time to make some bacon and eggs. He opens the fridge and realizes he is out of eggs. He closes the fridge door and places his hands on his hips. “I’m getting bacon and eggs one way or another.” He says to himself.
His cat saddles up beside him and begins to rub against his ankle. James looks down at the cat only to smile at the affectionate feline. “I love the way you look!” He says as he pets the cat. The cat meows loudly. “Hmmm…are you hungry?” He prepares the food for his cat. After getting ready he looks outside only to see that it is pouring outside. He retrieves his umbrella and heads to his car. While driving he get stuck in the morning rush. Blasting his music to the highest level he makes his way to the closest Eggsmart. When he arrives to work his direct supervisor reprimands him for being fifteen minutes late. James decides not to argue his case knowing that he had a great breakfast and things could always be worse.
He approaches his desk where he is immediately joined by his co-worker. James gives his co-worker a smile but is only met with a grunt and an awkward look. James begins to work on the computer, checking the time once every few hours. He presses his fingers against his lips as he ponders the tasks he will complete when he gets home. After an eight-hour shift James heads home where he is greeted by his cat. “Life is good isn’t it? I mean all I have to do is easy computer work all day!” He says to the cat.
The Differences Between Jesse and James:
There are several differences between Jesse and James but the most glaring one is how the two perceive their world. Notice how I said their world and not the world. It is important to always keep in mind that the world is merely a collective of entities each with their own perception of reality. Because of this one can easily make the argument that everyone lives in their own world. Jesse has a negative perspective on things not because he is a negative person but because he believes the world is negative. What he fails to realize is that this is his world and that he has the power to change his reality.
He looks at his cat and thinks his cat is shaming him, when he is shaming himself. He looks at his boss and thinks his boss is demeaning him, when in fact one can make the argument that his boss is just doing his job. The most glaring factor is when Jesse comes home. He is upset at his cat for being a cat. However, the reality is that he is upset at himself for being himself. All he does is eat, sleep, and go to work a mindless job, the key word is mindless. James on the other hand has taken complete control of his world and has placed a positive spin on it. He does things that provide him with happiness and chooses to accept the consequences. When one takes charge of their life they realize that most things that they encounter are a direct result of their actions. If you are like Jesse there are several powerful tools that you can use to rectify the situation. Below I will discuss one which will make your work life significantly less painful.
The Power of Something Else Continued:
Jesse and James work the exact same job, however one views it as mind numbing and painful while the other views it as simple and easy. How is it that two people doing the same work can have such polarizing viewpoints? The answer is simple. The concept of duality comes into play. The world is often divided into two opposite forces whether they be love/hate, positive/negative, freedom/enslavement etc. These two seemingly opposing forces are simply two sides of the same coin. So, the real question is how does one flip the coin? It is a lot easier than one may think.
While James is going through his daily tasks, he chooses to think about something more meaningful. This can come in the form of his next vacation, his novel that he is working on, or even the beautiful waitress at Eggsmart that he has been eyeing. The point is, while carrying out a mundane task he allows his subconscious and unconscious to do the work. In fact, while doing work he focuses on absolutely anything but the work itself. Now some of you are wondering, how does he perform well if he doesn’t focus on work? The answer to that is also very simple. How do you drive for miles while your mind drifts to another planet? You just do it. The subconscious and unconscious are both part of your psyche and have minds of their own. It is easier to think of them as functioning entities that are part of you. Each entity makes up the collective that is you. When one masters the power of something else they can achieve optimum levels of efficiency.
This technique works across all fields and industries however there is one catch. For the power of something else to work successfully one must first be good at their job. It is important that they have generated a level of proficiency and familiarity with their position. This means that you can’t start a new position that is challenging and not focus on the task at hand. Another question that one might be asking is if I’m checking out when do I check in? The answer to that is also very simple. You just do. The consciousness takes control when a situation arises that requires your undivided attention. Ultimately the power of something else is a technique that will augment your life if used properly.
